Pupils in S4 now study National 4 or National 5 courses. The majority of pupils continue the language studied in S1 & S2 to National 4 or 5. Over the course they continue to develop the four key skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Pupils use the differentiated Metro 4 course books. as well as a range of other materials.
Topics covered in S4 include Cities as Tourist Resorts; Technology; Tourism and Travel; Employability skills.
At National 4 level pupils build confidence using present, past and near future tenses. At National 5 level, pupils also learn to use the imperfect and future tenses.
In S4 pupils are assessed in Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing. At both National 4 and 5 levels, pupils need to pass one assessment in each of the above skills. In National 4, pupils also have to complete the Added Value Unit.
Pupils studying National 5 are required to complete a Performance which is assessed internally by the class teacher. They will also sit a final examination in Reading, Listening and Writing which is set and assessed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
Homework is a vital to success in National 4 and 5 French. Pupils will receive homework on a weekly basis and are expected to learn vocabulary and grammar rules regularly at home. They may also be asked to redraft written pieces and prepare for speaking assessments. Pupils are also encouraged to access the internet as a means of independent study.
